As with proprietary raw formats, the actual image data in the DNG never gets changed. In contrast, since DNG is a documented file format that's designed to hold metadata, it's safe to write metadata directly into the DNG file, eliminating the need for sidecar files and thus simplifying the workflow. xmp file or in one or another application's database. So when you add metadata to an image, it gets stored in either a sidecar. Metadata friendlyĪ related issue is that, because proprietary raw files are undocumented, Adobe treats them as read-only files, since writing to them runs the risk of overwriting potentially useful data. Subsequent releases of Adobe DNG Converter address this problem by letting you embed a bit-for-bit copy of the proprietary raw file that can be extracted at any time, at the cost of a somewhat larger file size. While the only things that could possibly use this metadata were the vendors' proprietary raw converters, few of us like the idea of losing something in the translation. The first release of Adobe DNG Converter had one potential flaw-it stripped any private metadata that it couldn't understand. So unlike the proprietary raw formats, DNG can fairly lay claim to being an archival format. The DNG format provides insurance against obsolescence because unlike proprietary raw formats, it's an open, documented format whose file spec is readily available, so any reasonably talented programmer can build a converter that reads DNG files without any reverse engineering, even if Adobe should, perish the thought, no longer be in business. #Adobe dng converter software software#The question then becomes, what happens to all the images locked up in a defunct vendor's proprietary raw format? Archival formatĪ kindly third-party vendor may decide to take on the work of reverse-engineering the format to continue support (and let's all give a huge vote of thanks to Thomas Knoll for the enormous amount of work he's already done in decoding all those proprietary raw formats), but absent that, you'll be stuck with old, non-upgradable software at best, and gigabytes of unreadable data at worst. I bear no ill will to any camera vendor, and I hope that they'll all be around for decades to come, stimulating competition and innovation, but it's not beyond the bounds of possibility that one of today's vendors may not be around five, ten, or fifty years hence. One of the major problems with camera vendors' proprietary raw formats is that they're undocumented-only the camera vendor knows for sure what they contain. To DNG or Not to DNGĪdobe developed the DNG format in response to a very real concern over the longevity of digital raw captures. My personal bias is that the advantages of DNG outweigh any disadvantages, and using DNG sends camera vendors an important message about the future of digital photography, but it is a bias. It's entirely up to you whether or not you choose to use it-Camera Raw, Bridge, and Photoshop are equally happy with proprietary raw files or DNGs-but the following discussion may help you decide. Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS2Īdobe DNG Converter is a handy standalone application that converts camera vendors' proprietary raw images to Adobe's new DNG format. MATT COLVILLE KICKSTARTER PDFWhat do y'all think I should do? Should I get it? Wait for an "Extended Preview" PDF to appear online first? Now, this shows promise, but with how hollow Strongholds and Followers was, I'm terrified about investing $30 without first reading through an "Extended Preview" PDF online. MATT COLVILLE KICKSTARTER UPDATEIn short, it sucked.Ī year later, Matt Coleville agreed apparently! In a Kickstarter update he announced complete reworks of the army combat, citing a few of my own grievances. It felt like despite its simplicity, the structure was rigid that everyone at the table had to agree to ignore creative freedom with the system that is inherent in 5E, and instead use the system strictly for its intended use in its very limited scenarios. I felt like I had wasted my money, and a campaign was ended partially due to the unclear rules for soldier management, seemingly pathetic low entry costs, and frustratingly overlooked rules ("Hey! Let's not go into the dungeon, lets just have our soldiers clear it out!"). Matt Coleville, for all his YouTube success, had I think one short series on this ruleset and no side videos to expand or assist for this cliff notes-feeling-product. Especially when the rules themselves were so simplified that it was clear roleplay was to do most of the heavy lifting anyway, but then provides next to no examples in the book on how a DM should manage this. MATT COLVILLE KICKSTARTER FULLIt made me feel like I was reading the Alpha notes to a full game that I had paid full price for. Like, WHAT? Why even bring it up? What if the Kickstarter had failed or you never released the other book. I bought the PDF + Hardcover and the first RED FLAG appeared, it mentioned, several times, that various aspects of the rules would be done in the next book. While I knew the book wasn't a full Kingdom Building ruleset (as the next book already had its Kickstarter launch and succeed) from what I had heard there was enough to build armies, have wars, and manage a microcosm of a society. When I bought the PDF I had looked at several different reviews that all seemed quite positive. I've always been fascinated by Kingdom Building and Societal management in RPGs and the promise of freedom that D&D brings to the table makes me salivate with anticipation. So, Kingdoms and Warfare was announced a little bit ago as having the PDF launch. This KS went live yesterday, and it's already funded($600k) and well beyond its first stretch goal of $800k, which adds Rival Adventurers to the book! The next stretch goal is at $1m, and will add Lairs & Hoards to the book - or it might potentially become its own separate book! (Similar to Kobold Press' "Lairs" supplement to their "Tome of Beasts" series of books, I guess.TLDR: I got Strongholds and followers awhile ago, about a year after the PDF came out and was so disappointed that I'm nervous about looking into this new pdf. There is a preview PDF linked to on the KS page. This book is sort of reinventing a lot of classic creatures, making them much more fun to play and fight! It also has brand new creatures. MCDM is making a monster book, and it looks awesome! I've backed MCDM's other two books, and think they make top quality stuff, so backing this one was a given for me.
